Tips & Tricks
Our handy tips for making the most of your Treat Easi
Mastering Everyday Commands
Say your dog’s name and make sure they know that you have the dispenser and that it’s time to earn delicious rewards!
The key here is keeping your commands simple. For example; sit, wait, stay, heel etc. Always be upbeat, confident and relaxed when talking to your dog!
Use clear hand gestures to reinforce what you would like your dog to do. Our faithful companions love to follow body language and they are always looking out for what we are up to!
For simple tasks, as soon as your dog has actioned the command you can reward them with a simple push of the dispenser, causing a tasty treat to fall out. A well deserved reward to reinforce their excellent behaviour.
The Benefits of Repeat Rewarding
When your dog is learning a new command reward frequently and quickly to anchor the learning.
Repeat rewarding is also a very powerful technique if you are helping your dog to feel comfortable in an unfamiliar situation.
With a steady stream of treats your dog has a positive distraction to focus on.
To maintain your dog’s interest and provide even greater distraction try scattering a few treats around.
By having to search for them your dog will forget the negative situation which could have been making them feel fearful.
How To - Rapid Recall
Something we can all struggle with is getting our dog to come back. Often that burger or picnic is just too tempting!
Practice recall in your home and garden and reward enthusiastically initially so that your dog’s response to 'come' (or your chosen phrase) is automatic.
To really cement this, out on your walkies call your dog back even when you don’t need to. Reward them well and then let them go and play again.
This way your dog will associate ‘come’ with praise, treats, and even more enjoyment.
We don’t want our doggies to think that ‘come' always means the end of fun. Once we are ready, we can release them to have fun until we next need them to come to us.
Unfamiliar situations/Habituation
When passing another dog or situation you know your dog may not be comfortable with you can use the Treat Easi to remind them that this is a positive situation and turn their attention to you and the dispenser.
First, bring your dog over or if they are on the lead gently guide them to your side.
On the same side, hold the Treat Easi by your leg, turn away from the situation and dispense treats as you and your relaxed, happy dog walk confidently away.
Keep talking positively and praising your dog and reward frequently to keep your dog interested and close by you, as well as reinforcing their great behaviour!
Continuous treating is simple with Treat Easi. Just keep pressing the button on your dispenser and your dog will be relaxed, focusing on you and their tasty treats.
Don’t worry about over treating either, even as many as 10 of the treats we offer is less than 5 calories!
Over time your dog should become more relaxed as the once daunting situation has now been linked to tasty treats, turning it into a positive situation for your dog.
What is Jackpotting?
Dog behaviourists agree that jackpotting is one of the best ways to both maintain good behaviour in already well-behaved dogs and make sure that the lessons your new puppy is learning really stick.
Jackpotting is very simple and easy to do, especially with the Treat Easi.
If your dog is responding well to a command, then you can reduce the number of times you reward with just one treat by occasionally rewarding with lots of treats.
This keeps your dog focused as it leaves them wondering each time you call if it is time for a jackpot!
Implementing Random Rewarding
You can also keep your dog’s attention high by sometimes rewarding and sometimes not.
This technique is aimed at owners who already know that their dog is well behaved.
Being random with rewards keeps your dog alert as they are always wondering if this is the time that they will get a treat.
Be sure to reward frequently enough that you maintain your dog’s interest though.
Need an extra dispenser?
Our customers often tell us how useful it is to keep a Treat Easi in handy places around the house where they often need a quick treat!
- Try one by the door to keep your dog happy during visits by the postman, you can drop treats when your dog is calm and quiet with one hand, and sign for a parcel with the other!
- Why not take a Treat Easi in the car as well, that way you will always have one to hand wherever your adventures take you with your dog.
- Keep a dispenser in the living room to keep them calm whilst relaxing! Include your dog in movie night without fear of over treating or confusing your tasty treats and theirs. Treat time for all, but the snacks remain yours!
